Electricity in NSW — what you need to know

NSW has a competitive retail electricity market, which means you have a choice of retailer. The NSW Default Market Offer (DMO) sets a reference price — the "safety net" price that regulated standing offers can't exceed. Most market offers are priced as a percentage above or below this DMO.

In 2023–24, the DMO for a typical Sydney household was around $2,000–$2,300 per year. The more competitive market offers typically come in 10–25% below this, representing savings of $200–$575 per year for an average household.

Flat rate vs time of use in NSW

Most NSW households are on flat rate tariffs — a single rate per kWh regardless of when you use it. Time-of-use (TOU) tariffs are available if you have a smart meter and can shift usage to off-peak periods (typically overnight and weekends). TOU tariffs can save money if you have solar, an EV, or a battery system.

Common retailers in NSW

The major retailers in NSW include AGL, Origin Energy, EnergyAustralia, and Alinta Energy. Smaller challengers like Powershop, Red Energy, and Elysian Energy often offer competitive rates for customers who are happy to manage their account online.

How often should you compare?

Energy plans in NSW are reviewed annually by the AER. Retailers also quietly change their rates throughout the year. We recommend comparing every 12 months — or whenever you receive a letter from your retailer about a rate change.
