Electricity in Victoria — what makes it unique

Victoria was the first Australian state to fully deregulate its electricity market in 2002 and has one of the most competitive retail markets in the world. The Victorian Default Offer (VDO) sets the reference price — plans can be compared as a percentage above or below the VDO.

A notable difference in Victoria is the widespread use of smart meters. Victoria completed a state-wide smart meter rollout in 2013, which means most Victorian households can access time-of-use tariffs without any hardware cost.
