Compare plans nowElectricity in Victoria — what makes it unique
Victoria was the first Australian state to fully deregulate its electricity market in 2002 and has one of the most competitive retail markets in the world. The Victorian Default Offer (VDO) sets the reference price — plans can be compared as a percentage above or below the VDO.
A notable difference in Victoria is the widespread use of smart meters. Victoria completed a state-wide smart meter rollout in 2013, which means most Victorian households can access time-of-use tariffs without any hardware cost.
The Victorian Energy Compare tool
The Victorian Government runs the official Victorian Energy Compare website, which lists all available plans. BillBetter takes a different approach: rather than showing every plan, we personalise results based on your actual bill and show you only the plans likely to save you money.
Solar and batteries in Victoria
Victoria has strong solar uptake. If you have solar panels, your feed-in tariff rate matters as much as your usage rate. BillBetter currently focuses on usage comparisons — solar households should also check their feed-in tariff when comparing. We're adding solar-aware comparisons soon.
When to switch in Victoria
VDO prices are typically reviewed in January each year. Switching just before or just after the annual review is a good time to compare — retailers often release new offers around the same period.
